Rainwater Harvesting: H2O Sustainable Engineering

Rainwater Harvesting System

As building science and technologies evolve, architects and engineers continue to draw on the basic fundamental principles of sustainable design. LAN has been working with an industrial manufacturing facility, Pratt & Whitney Advanced Coating Technologies, a United Technologies Company to design a rainwater harvesting system that is integrated with the building’s cooling towers that provide process cooling water for use in the manufacturing process. Given the facilities substantial need for process water, a massive rainwater harvesting system was incorporated into the addition which houses the new mechanical equipment.  Rainwater from the 77,000 square foot roof is collected in a 50’ x 70’ x 7’ deep cistern below the mechanical equipment room addition for a total capacity of 152,171.5 gallons.
